PAINTED FLOOR and FAUX TAPESTRY

March 19 and 20, 2009 in our New York studio.
2 day Intensive course (9am to 4 pm)
Suitable for professionals and intermediate students.

This workshop will teach different treatments of floor designs and will explore different painting techniques. We will first look at some floor plans in scale and design different layouts for floor patterns and borders. Students will choose a pattern and borders form a large selection of our Library to use in their floor layout. We will work from references including: Roman marble and Byzantine mosaics, Italian and Russian wood inlays, and Oriental rugs in different styles and periods. Stenciling and silk screening will presented as a better alternative to hand painting in the development of selected projects.

Students will make different samples on 2'x2' plywood, some borders on assembled hard wood floor and heavy lined canvases. Students will take home these samples, which they can use for their portfolios as long as the class at Fatto a Mano is credited. If time allows, we will do a group project, executing a partial floor project on site.
